Rooikrans Bush Camp & Trails

ROOIKRANS HIKING TRAIL is situated in the Loskop Dam area, about 150 km, hour and half drive, from PTA/JHB.

MAIN CAMP (BASE CAMP)

  • This is a lovely base camp that accommodates 42 hikers is spacious: 

  • 3 X separate dorm style rooms with 22, 14 and 6 bed each.

  • Bunk beds and good covered mattresses are provided. 

  • Bring own towels, linen/ Bedding – sleeping bags & pillows.

  • Ablution facilities: ladies and gents separate: 

  • Hot showers (supplied by a “donkey” boiler), flush toilets and basins. 

  • The kitchen has 2 x 3 plate gas stoves, pots, pan, kettle, steel table and scullery with a sink.

  • Bring OWN gas bottles for the gas plates – standard fitting.

  • Bring all own cutlery and crockery, braai utensils, kitchen clothes, dish washing soaps etc. 

  • There is NO FRIDGE in the camp – the owner provides fridge facilities on his stoop at his farm house- arrange in advance.  Bring own big cooler boxes.

  • A big lapa with tables and chairs provides shelter and can be used for socializing and own ‘dining”.   Hikers can enjoy star gazing and a bon fire in the boma and conversation pit.

Rondawel Camp

  • For 8 people privately

  • 2 bedrooms (4 beds each)

  • Own kitchen, bath room and outside braai area under big shady trees.

  • Bring own cutlery & crockery and cooking utensils. No fridge.

  • Bring own towels, linen/ Bedding – sleeping bags & pillows.

Hiking Trails

  • There are 3 x day hikes with spectacular views on Loskop dam and valleys, indigenous forests,  beautiful kloofs with small cascades, spruitjies, riverines and a shoe string water fall (in summer months) and the rooi kranses  are main features on these trails.  Supporting ladders, board walks and hand railings help to make these trails most enjoyable and safe!

  • Trail 1: Witpens Kloof   = 7.6km – (3.8 grading)

  • Trail 2: Job se Kloof   = 11.4km – (4.5 grading)

  • (1+2 can be combined for a 15,8km trail

  • Ideal for the experienced hikers) – (7.5 grading)

  • Trail 3:  Draad Kloof   = 11.1km  – (5.4 grading)

Additional Info:

  • More than 110 indigenous tree species are marked and listed.

  • Over 75 species of birds have been listed already.

  • Game such as: Kudu, Bush buck, Impala, Duiker, Steenbok, Ribbok, Klipspringer, Njala, small cat species:  Genets, African civet, Caracal; Porcupine, Hedgehog, Vervet monkey, Baboon, Meerkat, Jackal, Brown hyena, Bush pig and Warthog can be seen.

  • All water supplies come from natural springs, safe drinking along the trails and in the camp.

  • Cement and rock pool to swim in, close to the camp.

  • Cell phone reception on higher areas on the trails, but NOT at the camp.

  • Network of dirt roads available for mountain biking: bring own bikes.

  • WOOD available for sale

  •  Borehole water available for drinking

  • GOOD FACILITIES for bigger groups, most enjoyable hikes, stunning views and waterfall in rainy season.
